From Pikachu to Miraidon: The Legacy of Electric-Types

The Electric typing has been defined by its mascot more than any other type in the franchise. When designer Ken Sugimori created Pikachu, he envisioned a cute, approachable creature for the anime's protagonist. That decision inadvertently created the single most recognizable video game character of the 21st century. Nintendo's corporate logo didn't always feature Pikachu, but today, no official Pokémon event is complete without it.

Every single generation since Kanto has introduced a "Pikachu clone"—a small, round, rodent-like Electric-type designed to evoke the same charm as Pikachu. Marill, Plusle and Minun, Pachirisu, Emolga, Dedenne, Togedemaru, Morpeko—the list goes on. While these clones are sometimes criticized, they represent a fascinating design tradition that gives each generation its own pocket-sized Electric mascot.

Beyond the clones, the Electric type has produced genuinely transformative and creative Pokémon. Rotom, introduced in Generation 4, is a ghost of electricity that can possess household appliances—a microwave, a lawn mower, a refrigerator—each one changing its secondary type. Rotom-W (Wash Form) became one of the most-used Pokémon in competitive history thanks to its unique Water/Electric typing. Generation 9's box legendary Miraidon, a futuristic electric dragon motorcycle, proved that the Electric type still has endless room for creative evolution.

Speed and Paralysis: Competitive Electric Strategies

In competitive Pokémon, Electric-types are prized for three things: exceptional Speed, only a single weakness (Ground), and access to the Paralysis status via Thunder Wave. Paralysis is widely considered the best non-damaging status in the game because it reduces the target's Speed by 50%—instantly turning a fast threat into a slow target that can be revenged by almost anything on your team.

Tapu Koko, the Electric-type guardian deity of Alola, completely revolutionized competitive play in Generation 7. Its Electric Surge ability automatically sets Electric Terrain upon entering battle, which boosts the power of Electric-type moves for all grounded Pokémon by 30% and prevents them from falling asleep. Tapu Koko pairs this with a base 130 Speed and strong offensive stats, making it one of the most used Pokémon in VGC doubles formats from 2017 through 2020.

Zeraora, the Mythical Electric-type cat from Alola, quickly became a fan favorite in competitive singles play. With 143 base Speed and a respectable 112 base Attack, it functions as a devastating fast physical attacker with access to Plasma Fists (a move that converts all Normal-type moves to Electric). In doubles, its Volt Switch pivoting creates incredible momentum for Electric-focused teams.

In the current Generation 9 meta, Miraidon stands alone in Ubers as one of the most powerful Pokémon ever created. Its Hadron Engine ability automatically sets Electric Terrain, which then powers its Booster Energy-activated special attack to terrifying heights. Combined with its near-unresisted Electro Drift signature move, Miraidon can eliminate Pokémon that try to resist it.
